Hey everyone! So this is my first post on my personal blog so I hope you all enjoy reading it! Today we are going to explore a south Indian traditional dish known as Masala Dosa. You may or may not heard of this dish. It is a very common dish that you must try if you ever get the opportunity to travel to India! Even if you can’t travel there I would definitely recommend going to an Indian restaurant and ordering this dish!
Masala dosa is typically eaten for breakfast although you can have it for brunch, lunch, a snack, and even for dinner. Masala dosa’s main ingredient is potatoes! This is a vegetarian dish filled with potatoes, onions, peas, chili powder and a few other ingredients. You can alter what vegetables and extra spices you add by your own personal preference. For the dosa shell (which is the outer browned part that almost looks like a fajita wrap) you just need rice, special types of dal, salt, and oil. It is pretty simple to make but it is very time consuming! Just to boil the rice and all of the ingredients it takes a few hours! So when making this make sure you have time to prep all the items beforehand. I would suggest making the dosa shell and masala the night before and then cooking it the day of. Once everything is boiled you just need to make it into a batter like form which is similar to making pancakes. You just pour the batter on a pan with oil and let it brown on one side and flip it over and WA LA your dosa shell is ready to go!
As you can see in this picture to the left, it is very similar to cooking a pancake. Make sure you don’t overcook it because it will become too crispy and fall apart as you try to eat it!
The next part is to make the “masala” part which is the filling that goes inside the “dosa” shell. For the masala filling you need potatoes, onions, chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, and curry leaves depending on how spicy you want it to be. If you can’t tolerate any form of spice DO NOT put curry leaves and the chili powder inside the mix. It will become spicy and will burn for those who can’t tolerate any spice. I am used to spicy foods so this is not spicy at all when I eat it. All you have to do is cook the onions on a pan until they are golden brown and then add in the potatoes and spices. You mix it all together and the potatoes will have a neon yellow/ greenish color because of the turmeric powder. That is COMPLETELY normal because it is supposed to be a yellowish color. Once you cook the masala it is now ready to be filled into the dosa shell. You just spread it on the shell and roll the shell up like a fajita wrap and eat! You eat this with your hands.. I repeat this is eaten with your hands. It is disrespectful to use silverware while eating certain dishes and this is one of them. I only know this through personal experience. To them its like eating a burger with a fork and knife.. you just don’t do it.

So go on now make this dish and enjoy it!
